As research on subjectivity has already shown (Bühler 1934; Mushin 2001), speakers do not just neutrally and mechanically describe states and affairs in the world sorting to objective and prefabricated linguistic formulations, but their personal identity sometimes crops up through a range of viewpoints. ‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. La norma desempeña un papel fundamental en el ámbito de la adquisición de las segundas lenguas (ASL), tanto en el proceso de aprendizaje-enseñanza que se desarrolla en el aula como en la investigación sobre la lengua de los aprendientes. Una lengua solo puede ser descrita a partir de un referente que se erige como el estado de lengua meta para el aprendiente, por lo que determina la selección y el tratamiento de las muestras de lengua aportadas en el aula, y, asimismo, se constituye como modelo con el que se contrasta el output lingüístico del alumno. As Lakoff and Johnson (1980: 3) state in Metaphors We Live by, “our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature.” From a linguistic point of view, metaphors not only exist in everyday language but in specialized discourse too, where they are frequently the result of interdisciplinary borrowings.
